Labradoodles: are they good pets or bad?

My family is considering getting a labradoodle, since my mom is allergic. Yeah, I have heard that you can't predict their traits, since they're crossbreeds. But where would be a good place to get a labradoodle puppy? Are there any good breeders (I've heard there is no such thing as a "good" labradoodle breeder, since they are mutts), or can we find a good dog at an animal shelter (a no-kill shelter, preferably)?
