What is the best way to ease arthritic pains in a dog?

i had a senior dog who i put on metacam ... he used to be very rickety and when on that medication i no longer had to carry him up and down stairs and he could go for short walks and even ran around the house a bit ... you do have to get it from the vet but i was very happy with the results of that medication ...
