Whats the point of having an Agent in MLG?

Me and my brother are entering MLG and noticed the free Agents thing. What is the point of getting an Agent in MLG? We are goin in for Mortal Combat for Xbox360 and are talented at it. My brother has been in MLG before but never had an agent. So is it needed? Why?
