My dog just died and I might get another what breed should i get?

my dog just passed away I loved him he was an Airedale terrier he was so sweet! I got him a cement dog memorial and I visit him every day. He was our guard dog and family dog. But well we need another guard dog so what breed should we get. Well he needs to be able to protect himself and us sometimes family friendly and well short haired heck I do not care if it is a mutt but please tell me breeds shelters in washington your favorite breeds thanks
